what kind of paint to use on outdoor concrete statues

Did you lot know yous can paint concrete garden statues? Or in the case of this physical goose re-paint the statue? Sunlight and rain will fade or wash the paint from these pieces over time. I found out it's an easy job to repaint them. The concrete goose never looked better! And I have a bonus concrete cactus project I painted using watercolors!

This is my starting time time at painting a physical or statue. My neighbor has a vintage concrete goose statue that'south been in her grand for as long as I tin recollect and it was in bad demand of a makeover. My neighbor, Evelyn,  told me 1 twenty-four hours she was probably just going to have to get rid of it. Nope, not on my sentry. I similar seeing that goose from my workshop door and I know she would miss it.

I told Evelyn I would endeavour to paint the goose but not to have any high expectations. Later on all, I'm not a decorative painter or artist. Make clean The Garden Statue

I get-go cleaned the goose with Simple Green. I scrubbed and scrubbed but couldn't get off some of the gunk/spots. I figured I could paint over the dirt so no worries. When cleaning the bill I noticed there were several loose pieces nearly loose enough to fall off.

Brand Repairs To The Statue

I grabbed some Gorilla Glue for the cracks and filled the holes and cracks the best I could trying non to scrap off more than of the cement. Then I wrapped the bill and head with painters tape until the glue dried. It seemed to work. Remember where there's a will there's a way.

Y'all guys have to remember I'm just wingin' information technology (no pun intended) considering I've never painted a garden statue. I was definitely going to give the little goose my best though.

Use The Right Paint

Proficient thing at that place was enough original paint on the goose that I could kind of figure out where the paint lines were. I used FolkArt Coastal Textured Paint (discover here on Amazon) for the torso of the goose. The paint is for indoor/outdoor projects and was perfect for this outdoor statue. Since this little girl spends all her time out in the sun outdoor paint is a must.

That was the simply outdoor pigment I had in the colors I needed so the rest of the paint is acrylic from the small bottles like you get at the craft store. These are too multi-surface outdoor paints and then nosotros will see how well they piece of work. I found the perfect colour in my sash for the beak.

Paint The Statue

The webbed feet are the same orange color. I used a diverseness of different size brushes and I didn't employ tape for straight lines or anything. The goose was a little rough so I didn't call up it would be a big bargain if the paint wasn't perfect.

I didn't have the right light-green paint colour either and then I added black to a bit of light-green acrylic pigment to go far darker. You can see the difference in the paint colors in the picture higher up. The original dark-green paint was too light and glaring.

The special mix green was merely right. When I don't have a sure color even when working on a furniture project I will mix colors together until I get the shade I like. I tried to go the paint into all the nooks and crannies where the cement had broken off or was cracked. A small paint castor worked best for these small hard to get to areas.

The body color of the goose was likewise uniform and the feathers composite in so I dry brushed a scrap of very stake, argent blue paint over the feather details. I recall it does make the feathers stand out a fleck looking at the goose from the street. A flake of dissimilarity adds depth and dimension to paint projects like this one.

I painted the eyes black with Beyond Paint in Licorice and added the eyelashes with a blackness Permanent Sharpie. Whatever works right?

I'm not certain all that paint is going to stay on even though I sprayed several coats of Krylon Sealer on the finished Goose.

Return The Goose To It'due south Dwelling

Isn't she cute. I'm  glad I could exercise this for my Evelyn and she was so happy. She lives right next door to us and I see this goose everyday if I look out the garage door of the workshop or if I'm working on a project outside.

Evelyn is e'er telling me stories nigh her family, the one-time days, and the history of the area we live in. She is one smart and well informed lady and and so many subjects. Funny too. Concrete Goose Statue with Patriotic Bow Tie

I took this photograph a couple of days after we returned the goose to it's home. Yous can see information technology has a patriotic bow now. Side by side up is painting a cactus statue! Afterwards painting the neighbour's goose I was ready to attempt another lawn statue project. The results were crawly if I do say and then myself.

The cactus is only the cutest thing ever at present. The secret to this look is using several pigment colors to keep the painted cactus from looking apartment or ane dimensional. The whole pigment chore took less than three hours including downtime……..watching  paint dry. Maybe I should prove you lot how the cactus looked before I painted it then you lot'll understand why I'one thousand tickled pink.

I picked up the physical cactus at my favorite junk shop for $v. It was plain erstwhile crude concrete, no paint, no nothing, so it was a blank slate. I didn't notice the steer skull at the base of operations until I got it home. I call up this cactus belongs in Texas.

The paint I used for the projection is FolkArt ® Watercolor Acrylic Paint™. The watercolor paint can exist used on outdoor items as well as indoor stuff. Perfect for the cactus.

The kickoff step was to give the cactus an all over paint end. I mixed the white and sap light-green watercolors together to make a pale light-green and brushed it all over the cactus. I dipped the watercolor brush in h2o to spread the paint on the cactus. The bold concentrated colors spread hands. I didn't even use half of the ii oz. bottle of sap green and the color is going to show up over again in the makeover.

The next step after the first glaze of paint was dry out was to brush over the ridges of the cactus with sap green watercolor. I used the largest brush from the FolkArt® Watercolor Acrylic Paint™ Watercolor Brush Set to paint the cactus.

The third pace is painting the grooves of the cactus using the turquoise watercolor. I thinned the paint past dipping the watercolor brush in h2o and mixing it with the pigment on a paper plate . The thinned turquoise pigment is more of a launder and is a expert dissimilarity to the pale greenish color and the sap green colour.

This is how the cactus looked with the three paint layers. Layering paints keeps the end from existence flat and irksome. The cactus wouldn't have looked the same with just 1 overall pigment color.
